Surface preparation technology

Manufacturers must address several elements when bonding difficult-to-bond materials such as advanced polymers, thermoplastics, metals, glasses, ceramics and composites.  The first and arguably most important step in an adhesive bonding process is adequate surface preparation, comprising both surface cleaning and functionalization.  This is especially true for materials which exhibit low surface energy or heterogeneous surface contamination and chemistry.  Surface treatment challenges are amplified when bonding adherent surfaces with dissimilar cohesive energy densities, for example metal-to-polymer and metal-to-composite. 

To meet these challenges, improved surface treatment technology is needed that can consistently achieve clean and functional surfaces in a variety of bonding applications.  Besides addressing surface treatment requirements, new technology that is easily adapted to existing or new manufacturing tools or process automation delivers additional benefits, for example improved production flow, increased equipment utilization, decreased floorspace and improved global competitiveness through labor cost reduction, and improved worker safety and environmental quality.
